"Villa went close to an equaliser when Daley's fierce volley produced a fine save from Tony Coton. Garry Parker had another chance for Villa in the 25th minute, but he shot high over the bar."
STEVE McMahon set up City's sixth successive home win. While McMahon was the inspiration, City owe a huge debt to their saviour, goalkeeper Tony Coton.
Keith Curie and debutant David Brightwell also played their part in shutting out Villa's attack.
But it was Villa who were on the defensive at the start, and Paul McGrath had to pull off three last-ditch tackles
But it couldn't last and McMahon found a gap with a through ball to Niall Quinn who volleyed in his first goal since Boxing Day.
City clinched the points in the 75th minute after yet another McMahon pass from his own half released David White to shoot past Les Sealey.
