MATCHDAY QUOTES

“You could say we had our fifth choice attack playing with Yorke, Daley, Olney and Atkinson out but after Oldham ran the first half I thought we played very well in the second.

“I didn’t have a clue what my team was going to be at any point this week and I nearly called in all the staff in the morning for a training session and then picked what was left standing after it!”

“That's the quiz question isn’t it. Who’s scored all our League goals in 1992? [Only Cyrille Regis had scored to date.]

“Cyrille has been great He is not going to get tons of goals but he really put away his chance well.

“He [Matthias Breitkreutz] had a difficult marking job but we told him at half time to go out and show his ability and he looked good going forward. He did very very well.

“He [Matthias Breitkreutz] did well on Saturday but then he is and immensely talented young player with a great left foot and like all foresting players has a good technique.

“As an emerging young player he has to get into the English way of playing but without losing that natural ability and he has the advantage of being only 20.

“He [Cyrille Regis] may not be Gary Lineker now in terms of goals but he always makes a contribution and defenders don’t like playing against him.

“If someone comes up for grabs I will ask the board but there is no-one remotely available at present who I feel will benefit us.”

Ron Atkinson.

Villa took three points from Oldham only 24 hours after paying £1.7 million to the Lancashire club for England defender Earl Barrett.

Barrett, signed too late to play against his old club, watched from the dugout as his new team grabbed their first league win of 1992 and their first league goal in 518 minutes.

Cyrille Regis, their last marksman at Norwich on New Year's Day, was also the man who broke the barren run with a 52nd minute header from Stephen Froggatt's centre.

Les Sealey protected the lead with a superb save from Graeme Sharp and Villa almost added a second late on when Garry Parker's shot rebounded from an upright.

Without Tony Daley and Dwight Yorke, Villa were no threat in the first half when Oldham wasted three clear cut chances in the opening seven minutes.
