After 20 games and three wins Villa sit two points off the bottom of the table one point from safety as Watford - also held to a goalless draw - sit bottom. But focus lies elsewhere as the restless fan base take out their ire on Lionel Martin whilst Tommy Docherty blames all and sundry. Meanwhile, behind the scenes turmoil and discipline leave the club looking fractured on and off the pitch.

ON THIS DAY

Tommy Docherty's Villa fail to win for the seventeenth time in twenty League games to make it three wins, eight draws and nine losses in twenty division two games to sit bottom of the table. Meanwhile, Docherty handed a debut to Zambian forward Freddie Mwila, 23, who had joined from Atlanta Chiefs in September alongside debutant in the previous fixture, Emment Kapengwe. The game would proved to be Mwila's sole appearance for Villa.

*Birmingham Daily Post*
Monday, 17 November 1969

“We have no training pitch of our own.

“We rent one and I reckon we can do more in a week at Lilleshall than we can in a month in Birmingham.

“Look at our two main strikers Brian Godfrey and Lionel Martin - they’ve scored just once each in the last eleven games.

“Kapengwe did not get so much of the ball [as on debut].

“They [the supporters] did it [boo] to Bruce Rioch last Wednesday and they’ve been cruel to Brian Tiler.

“One wonders who is going to be next.

“I reckon our supporters are the best in the world but it’s me who get the stick at the end of the season if things haven’t gone well.

“After all players don’t go out to play badly.”

Tommy Docherty trots out all the excuses he can muster.
