On This Day
Villa suffer a shock defeat to fifth from bottom Walsall but remain second in the table, level on points with Fulham.
Villa though are four points behind leaders Bristol Rovers - who they play next - and Torquay, two points behind now have two games in hand on Vic Crowe’s side.
Villa’s defeat is however overshadowed by the news that ‘keeper John Dunn was involved in a car crash in West Bromwich the following day to leave him hospitalised.
Vic Crowe's League Cup finalists Villa open 1971 with a humiliation at Fellows Park as they fail to score for the first time in twelve games and are hammered by Walsall to make it twelve wins, seven draws and five defeats in twenty four division three games so far this season.
What they Said
“John Dunn’s unfortunate accident is a blow but I refuse to be panicked.
“I shall wait to see what our specialist has to say before I come to any decisions [about bringing in a replacement ‘keeper.]
“It would be foolish to do anything hasty until I know the full extent of the damage.
“He will have an operation later this week.
“We may have to try to borrow an experienced goalkeeper if Dunn does not make a quick recovery.
“But it is not always easy to get a good man for the job.”
Vic Crowe.
