Villa are reduced to nine almost from the off as Birmingham's roughhouse tactics come to the fore, back to 11 men Villa run the first half and Birmingham ragged but cannot make the deserved breakthrough.
Somehow however Villa find themselves a goal behind against the run of play after half an hour and so it remains until half time.
The second half saw a repeat of Villa's incessant pressure but to no avail and without being able to place a glove on Villa, their neighbours take both points.
Astonishingly it's Villa's fourth successive defeat at St Andrew's.
Villa make it two wins, six draws and two defeats in their opening ten division one games of the season.
