Player #281 for Aston Villa, Cyril Henry Spiers, played as a goalkeeper for the club.
Cyril played for Villa between 1920-21 and 1926-27 making 112 appearances.
Cyril was born practically on the steps of Villa Park in Witton on 4 April 1902 and he made his debut appearance for Villa on 25 December 1920 aged 18.
Villa had signed Cyril from Halesowen Town AFC just a few days earlier in December 1920.
Cyril was the 32nd custodian of the Villa goal in League and Cup football and made 2 appearances in his debut season of 1920-21.
However with Villa’s long term number one Sam Hardy’s career winding down opportunity arose.
From 1922-23 Cyril was vying with Tommy Jackson for the next 4 seasons to be Villa's number one and although appearances in 1923-24 proved sporadic he accumulated 112 appearances over his 7 seasons with Villa, conceding 167 at a ratio of 1.49 whilst keeping 28 clean sheets before injury put paid to his ambitions of a longer stay.
Cyril was forced to retire due to the seriousness of his injury as, believing that he would never play again, Villa released him.
Cyril however underwent experimental surgery that meant he was able to subsequently resurrect his career with Tottenham Hotspur.
Cyril had played his last game for Villa on 30 August 1926 aged just 24.
Cyril played under both the George Ramsay and Billy Smith led Management Committees.
Cyril passed away on 21st May 1967 aged 65
