Player #279 for Aston Villa, Thomas Smart, known as Tommy Smart and nicknamed Tic played as a full back for the club.
Tommy played for Villa between 1919-20 and 1932-33 making 450 appearances.
Tommy was born in Blackheath, just 8 miles from Villa Park, on 20 September 1896 and he made his debut appearance for Villa on 14 February 1920 aged 23.
Tommy made 4 appearances in that season’s successful FA Cup campaign including playing in the FA Cup Final victory over Huddersfield Town in front of a crowd of 50,018 at Stamford Bridge.
Tommy’s first season brought his first and sadly only trophy for the club during a long and distinguished career.
Villa had signed Tommy from Halesowen Town AFC for a fee of £300 in January 1920.
Such was Tommy’s impact on the first team and the remarkable relationship he struck up with left back Tommy Mort (who would join Villa in the 1921-22 season), that they became known as “Death and Glory” with Smart famed for his tackles and barrel-chested, 13st 8lbs and 6ft 2ins frame.
Tommy was a permanent fixture at right-back for Villa through to the 1931-32 season when his age, 36, saw him give way to the decade younger Danny Blair.
Tommy left Villa a couple of seasons later in May 1934 to join Brierley Hill Alliance.
Tommy had played under both the George Ramsey and the Billy Smith led Management Committees.
Tommy passed away on 10th June 1968 aged 71.
