Player #293 for Aston Villa, Thomas Mort, known as Tommy Mort, played as a left back for the club.
Tommy played for Villa between 1921-22 and 1934-35 making 370 appearances and scoring twice.
Tommy was born in Kearsley on 1 December 1897 and he made his debut appearance for Villa on 15 April 1922 aged 24.
During his time with Villa Tommy - famed for his sliding tackles - struck up the infamous “Death and Glory” full back partnership with namesake Tommy Smart that would serve Villa so well.
Villa had signed Tommy from Rochdale for a fee of £1,000 earlier in the month and in total played for the Villa for 13 seasons.
Tommy was signed as a replacement for Tommy Weston and such was his quality and team contribution that he made the position his own and even surpassed the excellence of his predecessor.
It couldn’t last forever however and even Tommy Mort couldn’t beat time and by 1933 he retreated to a more secondary role on the team ahead of his final game on 19 January 1935 at 37 years old.
Tommy also had the honour of becoming the first Villa player to play under 3 different managers - both the George Ramsay and Billy Smith led Management Committees and latterly Villa’s first manager proper, Jimmy McMullan.
Tommy passed away in Wigan on 6th June 1967 aged 69, a true Villa great.
