George Harkus
Player #292 for Aston Villa, George Cecil Harkus, played as a midfielder for the club in a position then known as wing half.
George played for Villa in 1921-22 and 1922-23 making 4 appearances
George was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne on 25 September 1898 and he made his debut appearance for Villa on 5 April 1922 aged 23.
Villa had signed George from Scotswood FC in May 1921, joining as an amateur, before signing professional forms with the club in February 1922.
George made four Division One appearances for Villa before being sold to Southampton for £250 in May 1923.
Following his football career which included a short, and at that time unusual, spell in French football, Harkus joined the RAF and served in WW2 stationed in the Middle East.
In the birthday honours list for 1949, Harkus was awarded the MBE for “keeping up the morale in the forces”.
George’s final game had come on 20 January 1923 aged 24 having played under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.
George passed away in Southampton on 28th September 1950 aged just 52, only a year after his award.
