George Stephenson
Player #288 for Aston Villa, George Ternent Stephenson, played as a forward for the club.
George played for Villa between 1921-22 and 1927-28 making 95 appearances.
George was born in Horton, Northumberland on 3 September 1900 and he made his debut appearance for Villa on 3 December 1921 aged 21.
Villa had signed George from Leeds City for a fee of £250 at auction in November 1919.
George had started with hometown junior club New Delaval Villa in 1918 before joining Leeds City in 1919, for whom he hadn’t made a first team appearance when the club was expelled from the League in October 1919 and disbanded.
Villa then purchased him at the subsequent player auction and 2 years later George made his debut against Liverpool in December 1921.
Initially a fringe player - making 17 league appearances in his first 3 seasons, George began to feature more from 1924-25 and became almost ever present in 1926-27 when he also contributed 13 league goals in his 36 appearances.
George was the brother of Villa legend Clem Stephenson and fellow Villa player Jimmy Stephenson.
George played his last game for Villa on 31 August 1927 aged 27 before moving on to Derby County in November 1927 for a fee of £2,000.
George had played under both the George Ramsay and Billy Smith led Management Committees.
George passed away in Derby on 18th August 1971 aged 71.
