"After half an hour's play Tonks headed a goal for the Wanderers. Crabtree and Campbell, however, scored again for the Villa."
*The Sheffield Independent*
Tuesday, 7 April 1896
ASTON VILLA v. WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS.
This, the Villa's last League match, was played at Perry Barr before 15,000 persons. Both sides were fully representative. The Villa had the best of the opening play, showing better combination than their opponents, whose defence was, however, excellent.
Half an hour passed without scoring, but then John Cowan put one past Tennant.
Interval — Villa 1, Wanderers nil.
The feature of the play in the second half was the brilliant custodianship of Tennant, who saved a great many difficult shots.
Campbell at length beat him with a beauty.
After half an hour's play Tonks headed a goal for the Wanderers. Crabtree and Campbell, however, scored again for the Villa.
Result: — ASTON VILLA 4 goals. WOLVERHAMPTON 1 goal.
