Billy Dorrell
Player #107 for Aston Villa, William Dorrell, known as Billy Dorrell, played as a forward for the club.
Billy represented Villa in 1894-95 and 1895-96.
Billy was born in Aston, Birmingham in 1872 and made his debut as a 22 year old on 8th September 1894.
Villa had signed Billy from Leicester Fosse for a then club record of £250 and he went on to represent the club 11 times across his 2 seasons at the club.
In his short time with the Villa Billy contributed to the 1894-95 FA Cup win and the 1895-96 League Championship victory.
Billy scored twice in the 7-1 demolition of Newcastle United in the 2nd Round at Wellington Road helping set Villa on the road to the 1894-95 FA Cup final hosted at Crystal Palace, London where Villa once again beat West Bromwich Albion, this time 1-0.
In the following season Billy appeared in 2 league games in the 1895-96 Championship winning season scoring once in the 3-1 over Blackburn Rovers at Wellington Road.
Billy’s final game for Villa came on the 16th November 1895 aged 23 following which he rejoined Leicester Fosse.
Billy had played his Villa career under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.
Billy’s contribution to Villa however did not end on his departure as Billy’s son Arthur was to play for the Villa throughout the 1920’s
Billy passed away in 1937 aged 67.
