Player #96 for Aston Villa, John Reynolds, known as Jack Reynolds, and nicknamed Baldy played as a midfielder for the club in a position then known as a right half.
Jack represented Villa between 1893-94 and 1896-97 making a total of 110 appearances.
Jack was born in Blackburn on 21st February 1869 and made his debut as a 24 year old on 2nd September 1893.
Villa had signed Jack from West Bromwich Albion and he went on to help Villa secure 3 League Championships in 1893-94, 1895-96 and 1896-97 as well as 2 FA Cups in 1894-95 and 1896-97, the latter completing a double for the club.
Jack was a core member of the Villa side that delivered unprecedented success through the 1890s.
The Villa News and Record of 1st September 1906 paid tribute to Reynolds:
“A remarkably smart half-back. For his inches a perfect wonder. Knew every ‘trick of the trade’, and usually showed up well in big matches. Had a happy knack of scoring at critical moments. Something of a roamer, he had the unique distinction of representing both Ireland and England in International matches. Had an eye to the humorous side of football.”
Jack’s final game for Villa came on the 26th April 1897 aged 28 after which he moved on to Glasgow Celtic.
Jack played under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.
Jack passed away in Sheffield on 12th March 1917 aged just 48.
