What they Said
"The game all along to the finish was contested with an unprecedented determination, but the doughty Villains could not get through and had to put up with a defeat of two goals to nil."
EVERTON v. ASTON VILLA.
MEETING OF GIANTS.
The meeting of these rivals, who are by general consent to fight out a League championship, at Liverpool, on Saturday, was the chief event in League circles. The weather, barring the fog, was perfect, and the ground, though hard, was in capital condition. Each side had their centre half away when they were expected to turn out, the first time for weeks.
The play opened at a great rate, and both Wilkes and Hillman had to deal with shots which have beaten the bulk of custodians.
The home attack all along showed machine like precision, and fairly captivated the 25,000 spectators present. Campbell, for the Villa, and Cameron, for the Evertonians, were shining lights, but for a ling time the defence was equal to the attack.
Gradually Everton for more and more into the Villa goal mouth, and after both Spencer, Crabtree, Welford and Wilkes had saved, the home side scored out of a scrummage.
This nettled the Villa, and off they went. Hillman saved brilliantly from Campbell and Athersmith. The game was intensely exciting, and when half time was sounded the scores stood - Everton, one; Villa nil.
The home side did not abate their efforts one jot during the whole of the second half. Right from the start Millward and Chadwick rushed off, and the ball was banged into tenet, but the referee would not have it and gave offside.
Then Athersmith and his companions put on full show, but in the Everton half back they found a trio which never once let them settle or get on the ball. The result was that though they often got into the company of the home backs, they were not able to shady and shoot.
Notwithstanding, Hillman, had a lot to do and time after time he was cheered to the echo. The journeys from end to end were effected with a lightning like rapidity. At length Cameron, with a fine dribble, threaded his way through, and putting the ball neatly to Bell he scored a fine goal, the crowd going frantic with delight.
The game all along to the finish was contested with an unprecedented determination, but the doughty Villains could not get through and had to put up with a defeat of two goals to nil.
