What they Said
"The visits of the visitors into the home territory were never of long duration, while if Burnley secured a comer it invariably proved fruitless."
Aston Villa v. Burnley.
At Perry Barr, before 5,000 spectators. The Villa, almost from the start, had the best of matters, although their shooting was somewhat faulty.
Athersmith roused the spectators ten minutes before the interval by dashing down the field with lightning speed and banging the ball through in brilliant fashion.
Half time score:—Aston one goal; Burnley, nil.
The second half found the Villa in much better form, Smith at once making attack, which Devey made certain of by rushing both the ball and the Burnley goalkeeper into the net.
Place, jun., got an opening, but his shot struck the bar, and before his side could rally, the ball was carried to the other end, where Smith shot, and Athersmith rushed it through.
Devey scored the fourth goal.
The visits of the visitors into the home territory were never of long duration, while if Burnley secured a comer it invariably proved fruitless.
Once Bowes had exceedingly hard lines, and was not until 15 minutes from the finish that Provan was able to break through the Villa defence and score with beauty. Burnley were playing grandly at the close. Final Score : Aston Villa 5, Burnley 1.
