MATCHDAY QUOTES
“The Wanderers’ back division was again soon troubled, as the Villa ran down in a determined manner. Rose saved a couple of hot shots, but a minute later the ball glanced off the referee’s leg into the net, and the Villa were placed in front.
The decision of the referee appeared to create much surprises even among the Villa players who were quite overjoyed at their good fortune.”
*The Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser*

Wolverhampton Wanderers v. Aston Villa.
Played at Wolverhampton, in frosty weather, before 15,000 spectators. Both sides were fully represented. The Wanderers played Topham on the right wing.
The ground was hard and foothold difficult.
The Wanderers scored through Owen in 20 minutes. Villa pressed for a long time after this reverse, but could not break through.
Half-time score : Wanderers, one goal; Villa, nil
The second half play was of an even character. Wilkes saved a shot from Wood, and Rose fisted twice in rapid succession, but could not stop from one from Smith, and then the Villa scored again soon after.
Out of a scrummage later the Wanderers made several efforts to get on level terms, but failed, and Aston could not increase the score.
Final Score : Villa 2 Wolverhampton Wanderers 1
