Jack Cowan
Player #114 for Aston Villa, John Cowan, known as Jack Cowan, played as a winger for the club.
Jack represented Villa between 1895-96 and 1898-99 racking up 71 appearances.
Jack was born in Bonhill, Dunbartonshire on 12th December 1870 and made his debut as a 24 year old on 21st September 1895.
Villa had signed Jack from Glasgow Rangers and he joined brother Jimmy ‘Jas’ Cowan at the club.
It can’t be easy being the brother of a legend and following in his footsteps but Jack made a great fist of it and in his own way was a special servant of Villa.
Jack’s first two seasons saw him help Villa to win the League Championship (1895-96) and the League & FA Cup double (1896-97) followed by another League Championship in his final season for good measure (1898-99)
Jack played in 22 of 30 of Villa’s games in the 1895-96 Championship winning season.
He then played in 15 of 30 of Villa’s games in the 1896-97 Championship winning season.
Jack made 3 appearances in the 1896-97 FA Cup campaign including the final, held at Crystal Palace in front of 65,891 people, as Villa recovered from a 2-1 deficit to beat Everton, 3-2.
By a twist of fate, as rival teams for the league title were involved in league matches on the afternoon of the 1896-97 FA Cup
Final, results meant that Villa’s lead at the top of the table became unassailable.
Therefore, Villa became the only club to have won the League and FA Cup on the same day.
The 1898-99 league title campaign saw Jack make 7 league appearances.
Jack’s final game for Villa came on 4th February 1899 aged 28 in the 2-0 defeat away at Preston North End.
Jack had played under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.
Jack then returned to his native Scotland to play for Dundee Harp.
Jack passed away in Stranraer on the 1st May 1937 aged 66.
