Jimmy Welford
Player #98 for Aston Villa, James William Welford, known as Jimmy Welford played as a full back for the club.
Jimmy represented Villa between 1893-94 and 1896-97 making a total of 83 appearances.
Jimmy was born in Barnard Castle on 27th March 1869 and made his debut as a 24 year old on 23rd September 1893.
Villa had signed Jimmy from Birmingham St. George’s and he went on to help Villa secure 3 League Championships in 1893-94, 1895-96 and 1896-97 as well as winning the FA Cup in 1894-95.
Jimmy, one of a number of cricketers come footballers to represent villa, played for then minor county Durham followed by Warwickshire but it was at Villa that Jimmy found fame as he went on to win a trophy in every season he played.
Jimmy’s final game for Villa came on 21st November 1896 at the age of 27 after which Jimmy moved to Celtic.
Jimmy played under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.
Jimmy passed away in Glasgow in 1945 aged 75.
