"After this the game was very hotly contested, each goal being assailed in turn. A long run by Athersmith led to Campbell getting ball, and he scored a clever goal for the Villa."

*The Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser*
Monday, 23 September 1895

Aston Villa v. Derby County.

In pleasantly fine weather, and before large crowd of spectators these teams met at Perry Barr.

The County kicked off, the Villa having the advantage of the hill and sun their backs.

In the first half John Cowan scored for the Villa after fifteen minutes' play, and after a few sharp attacks by the Villa forwards a strong run by the Villa led to Devey shooting a second goal for his side eight minutes after the first had been obtained.

Derby had some very hard line, scoring an off-side goal and doing a great deal of pressing.

Half time score :— Aston Villa, two goals ; Derby County none.

In the second half Derby County, who had the advantage of the slope, pressed their opponents considerably, and out of a scrummage M'Millan scored for them four minutes after the restart.

After this the game was very hotly contested, each goal being assailed in turn. A long run by Athersmith led to Campbell getting ball, and he scored a clever goal for the Villa.

Cowan scored a fourth goal from a scrummage, thus giving the home players a good lead.

The Derby men played up pluckily, John Goodall doing a lot of good work, but he was not always well supported. The Villa maintained their supremacy, but could not score again. Final Score : Aston Villa 4, Derby County 1.
