"For a time the Villa played Rovers almost to a standstill, their front rank being streets ahead in combination than that of their opponents."
*The Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser*
Monday, 30 September 1895
Blackburn Rovers v. Aston Villa.
At Blackburn, before 15,000 spectators. Despite the fact that the weather was terribly hot, the pace was fast from the start, and the game was most stubbornly contested.
The ball travelled rapidly from end to end, and both goalkeepers were often called upon, Ogilvie, however, having most to do.
After 23 minutes' play Campbell scored a grand goal for the Villa from a scrummage. Killean had a grand opening given him of equalising, but shot very tamely, and half time arrived with the score:—Aston Villa, one goal; Blackburn Rovers, none.
The second half was as strenuously fought as the previous one.
For a time the Villa played Rovers almost to a standstill, their front rank being streets ahead in combination than that of their opponents.
Ogilvie's brilliant goalkeeping, however, kept them from scoring, and after a while the Rovers' attack improved, but Spencer and Welford offered a stubborn resistance.
Twenty minutes from the end Chippendale equalised from a scrummage. The Rovers continued the pressure, and Wilkes saved with difficulty twice in quick succession. Final Score: Blackburn Rovers 1, Aston Villa 1
