On this day

Following a truly wretched first few months of the season with bad results coming thick and fast and with an ageing squad ailing almost regardless of opposition, Ron Atkinson was sacked. Ron Atkinson’s final game in charge of Villa came after the team under his stewardship had lost 8 of their last 9 Premier League fixtures to remain in 19th place of 22 teams in a season where the bottom four would be relegated to Division One. Atkinson’s departure however was not universally welcomed and the charismatic boss still had plenty of credit left from his Premier League Runners Up achievement in 1992-93 and League Cup win in 1993-94. Atkinson’s team however was showing its age and results were increasingly concerning making the decision of the Villa chairman one of his more understandable moves. Although a shame for his reign to end this way, Atkinson is fondly remembered. Future Villa midfielder Øyvind Leonhardsen scored an 89’ winner for Wimbledon.

The first game since the departure of Ron Atkinson saw Villa win their first league game in 10 under the stewardship of Jim Barron. Despite the result the White Hart Lane match would prove to be Barron’s sole game in charge of Villa as new boss Brian Little was installed ahead of the following weekend’s fixture. Graham Fenton scored his first, and only, goals of the season and what would prove to be his final two goals of the three he scored for the club in 39 appearances between 1994 and 1995. Future Villa centre back Colin Calderwood lined up for Spurs. Defender Chris Boden made his first squad appearance for Villa having come through the youth team set up.

Brian Little - one of Villa’s greatest ever players - took charge of the team for the first time in his new role as Villa boss. Little had left the manager position at Leicester City to return to his club - a fact the East Midlands side did not take kindly to, setting up a new and long-lasting animosity between the sides. Future Villa midfielder Ian Taylor made a 81’ substitute appearance for Wednesday.

On this day

  • Holders Villa suffer the embarrassment of defeat to Palace in the League Cup despite Dalian Atkinson’s 5th goal in 6 games.

  • Midfielder Dave Farrell, 23, is handed a rare start by new boss Brian Little in what proves to be his 8th and final appearance in a Villa shirt before moving on to Division Two Wycombe Wanderers in September 1995 for a fee of £100,000.

  • Ugo Ehiogu is sent off for the first time in a Villa shirt on his 57th appearance (44 Starts) to make it W23 D11 L23, 2 Goals, 1 Assist, 6 Bookings and 1 Red Card so far in his Villa career.

  • In the latest example of poor business acumen and short sighted decision making, Villa are taken to the High Court after former club Leicester seek an injunction to stop Brain Little from working for the club. The real issue is money, more to the point the failure of the parsimonious Chairman to compensate the Foxes for Little’s move. Rather than do the decent thing Villa are forced to plead with Mr Justice Smith in the High Court doing no-one any favours.

  • Future Villa centre back Gareth Southgate, currently known as a midfielder, scores twice for Palace.

In a hugely one-sided and unreciprocated display of acrimony, Brian Little returned to East Midland minnows Leicester City just two games since leaving them to join his boyhood club, Villa. Defender Chris Boden made his one and only appearance for Villa aged 21 after joining the club as a trainee. Boden moved on to Derby County in March 1995 for a fee of £169,000. Bryan Small made his first start of the campaign having last played for Villa as a 46’ substitute in the final game of the 1993-94 season. Former Villa ‘keeper Kevin Poole, former Villa centre forward Ian Ormondroyd and former Villa midfielder Mark Blake lined up for Leicester. Future Villa midfielder Mark Draper, future Villa winger Franz Carr and future Villa forward Julian Joachim also featured for the Foxes.

Just when a first win in three became ever more urgent Villa delivered their worst result of the season as Arsenal ripped the team apart at Villa Park to leave the club teetering on the precipice of a relegation battle. Villa had lost successive fixtures and had now lost seven of their last 23 Premier League games under Brian Little winning 7 and drawing 9 leaving them standing 16th place in the table after this latest defeat. Villa cult hero Dalian Atkinson made his final appearance aged 27 before moving on to Fenerbahçe S.K. for a fee of £500,000. Atkinson played for Villa between 1991-92 and 1994-95 making 113 appearances and scoring 35 goals including the greatest goal in Premier League history. Later in life tragedy hit Dalian, killed by the police in a taser assault, he died aged just 48 in August 2016. Dalian Atkinson, a player and a man who will never be forgotten.

On this day

Villa finished the season unbeaten in three games, winning once - enough to leave them one place above the relegation places. Forward Dean Saunders made his final appearance for Villa aged 30 before moving on to Galatasaray S.K. for a fee of £2,350,000. Saunders had played for Villa between 1992-93 and 1994-95 making 144 appearances and scoring 50 goals. Centre back Shaun Teale made his final appearance for Villa aged 31 before moving on to Tranmere Rovers for a fee of £450,000. Teale had played for Villa between 1991-92 and 1994-95 making 179 appearances and scoring 5 goals. Left back Phil King made his final Villa appearance aged 26. King was only signed for Villa by Ron Atkinson in August 1994 but wasn’t to be part of Brian Little’s plans and would move on to Swindon Town in March 1997 having made 23 appearances.
