In the latest example of poor business acumen and short sighted, panicked decision making from the Chairman, Villa are taken to the High Court after former club Leicester had sought an injunction and are forced to plead with Mr Justice Smith to not stop Brain Little from working for the club. Needless off the field distractions - as ever caused by the parsimonious Ellis - impact on field performances as Villa suffer the embarrassment of defeat to Palace in the League Cup despite Dalian Atkinson’s fifth goal in six games.

ON THIS DAY
Midfielder Dave Farrell was handed a rare start by new boss Brian Little in what was to prove to be his final appearance for Villa aged 23. Farrell moved on to Division Two Wycombe Wanderers in September 1995 for a fee of £100,000. Farrell had played for Villa between 1992-93 and 1994-95 making 8 appearances and scoring once.
Future Villa centre back Gareth Southgate scored twice as Palace came from behind to sweep aside Villa and knock the holders out of the League Cup.

Belittled Villa court disaster
TROUBLED Aston Villa won their battle in the High Court yesterday, but suffered their biggest humiliation of the season where it really counts.
The Villa lawyers convinced Mr Justice Smith not to stop new manager Brain Little from working for the club.
Little's former club Leicester had sought an injunction, but Villa emerged victorious after a a 60-minute hearing behind closed doors.
But after a 90-minute cross-examination last night, the Villa Park bosses must have been wondering if it was all worthwhile.
The Coca-Cola Cup, won at the expense of Manchester United last season, was ripped from their grasp by double salvoes from Gareth Southgate and Chris Armstrong.
Little's men survived the 25th minute sending off of England Under-21 defender Ugo Ehiogu to take the lead with Dalian Atkinson's fifth goal in six games.
But two goals apiece from Southgate and Palace captain Armstrong crowned a superb second-half comeback and condemned Villa to their heaviest defeat of the season.
It was a night of mixed fortune of Republic of Ireland defender Paul McGrath who cleared a thundering 30-yard drive from Dean Gordon off the line in the fourth minute, but was at fault for the final goal when Armstrong took the ball off his toes before scoring.
