What they Said
"ANGRY manager Glenn Hoddle blasted Chelsea's rock-bottom performance which gifted new Aston Villa manager Brian Little his first win."
ANGRY manager Glenn Hoddle blasted Chelsea's rock-bottom performance which gifted new Aston Villa manager Brian Little his first win.
Hoddle's tattered troops were simply pathetic, and £1million signing lan Taylor's 82nd minute goal merely compounded the damage done when Steve Staunton and Dwight Yorke scored before the break.
Although substitute Mark Stein hit a post in the closing moments Chelsea's threat was minimal throughout.
Villa, with only one previous home success, were allowed to do pretty much as they liked and Little’s men needed no second invitation.
If Dean Saunders had not wasted five clear-cut chances it would have been an evening of utter carnage.
Villa went in front after nine minutes through Staunton. When his right returned to the left back he whipped in a wicked curling ball aimed at the far post.
Dmitri Kharine was already struggling but the keeper was left with no hope of saving when Staunton’s effort flicked off Frank Sinclair.
Villa skipper Kevin Richardson somehow missed the target when he took aim with a careful volley from seven yards.
But Chelsea's sighs of relief were stifled after 32 minutes when a carefully rehearsed routine saw Andy Townsend head on Staunton's free kick.
In came Trinidad striker Yorke, who took over from the injured John Fashanu, to force a lunging close range header through Kharine's grasp with the keeper allowed mere split second to react.
The big surprise was that Chelsea somehow avoided further punishment until eight minutes from the end. Then the alert Yorke picked out Taylor with right wing cross for the former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder to plant a firm header wide of Kharine.
