Despite victory in the away leg Villa exit the UEFA Cup on away goals to Trabzonspor after conceding at the death at Villa Park.
Paul McGrath makes his 250th appearance in a Villa shirt and makes it W107 D64 L79, 8 Goals, 9 Assists and 9 Bookings so far in his Villa career.
Kevin Richardson secures his 75th win in a Villa shirt on his 170th appearance to make it W75 D44 L51, 16 Goals and 17 Assists so far in his Villa career.
BEMUSED boss Ron Atkinson was left cursing "this freak result" as Villa crashed out of the UEFA Cup last night.
After removing holders Inter Milan, Villa were steaming towards round three when Dalian Atkinson levelled the aggregate scores in the 77th minute, after Steve Staunton's penalty was blocked.
Trabzonspor's Ogun was sent off for conceding the spot kick when he handled on the line which left Villa as racing certainties against the ten-man Turks.
But with extra time looming, and Trabzonspor out on their feet, striker Orhan, who got the single goal which separated the sides in the first leg, swivelled to fire just under the bar in the 92nd minute.
There was still time for Ugo Ehiogu to slide in Villa’s second, as Dutch referee Jaap Ulienburg added on nearly six minutes for stoppages.
But it was not enough to save Villa's fighters from a sad exit on the away-goal rule.
Adding to Villa's agony, fans spilled on to the pitch at the final whistle, with disappointed home supporters appearing to aim blows in the direction of triumphant Turks.
Villa were fined £12,500 for a crowd invasion after conquering Italian giants Inter in a sensational penalty shoot-out. Now the rules of Europe will be poised to hand down even harsher punishment.
Atkinson could hardly believe what his eyes told him was true. Big Ron, left to continue a mounting relegation battle.
“It’s all so cruel. We battered Trabzon in the second half, we completely swamped them.
“Some of the chances we missed were quote amazing, although I’m not going to single out individuals for blame because it was an excellent overall performance.
“Earlier, we could have had a penalty for a foul on Andy Townsend, and television clearly shows Dalian Atkinson wasn’t offside when he netted a minute before the break. Honestly, this could so easily have been five or six goals in our favour. It was a one horse race.
“I’d have been happy to settle for extra time against ten men, but what happens instead? They go and score in what seemed like their only attack of the second half.”
