'Hand of Ehiogu' fails to inspire Villa
ASTON VILLA are still deep in relegation trouble after failing to capitalise on a drought-breaking goal from the 'Hand of Ehiogu' against Manchester City at Villa Park last night.
Ugo Ehiogu came to Villa's rescue in Diego Maradona fashion as he succeeded where his attacking colleagues have failed, becoming the first Villa player to score in 12 hours and 59 minutes of football since Andy Townsend netted at Newcastle on February 25.
The breakthrough came after nine minutes, when Steve Staunton, having played a one-two from a corner with Dwight Yorke, crossed the ball superbly to the near post, where Shaun Teale stooped to send a diving header looping goalwards.
Ehiogu seemed to use a hand to bundle the ball past John Burridge but that didn't matter to Villa's delighted fans.
However, delight was replaced by despair when City equalised in 63 minutes.
Shaun Teale was unable to deter Niall Quinn down the right wing, and the Republic of Ireland striker sent over a tantalising low centre, from which Uwe Rosier scored, despite managing only half a connection.
Villa are now just two points ahead of Crystal Palace.
