The run of 3 defeats to the end of the season flattered the Champions by giving the title race the look of a foregone conclusion as they finished 10 points clear. Given the immediate results Villa produced thereafter it is not beyond credibility that Villa’s form would have continued through the final 3 games to win the title most observers felt Villa’s play deserved. As it was however, Manchester United won their first title in decades.

• Meanwhile, Left back Charlie Aitken made his final appearance for Villa aged 33 before moving on to New York Cosmos in May 1976. Aitken played for Villa between 1960-61 and 1975-76 making 660 appearances and scoring 16 goals to become the record appearance holder for the club.
