ASTON VILLA V. SOUTH SHORE (BLACKPOOL)
These teams met at Blackpool, before about 2,000 spectators.
There was a strong wind blowing from goal to goal, and rain fell heavily during the greater portion of the game.
These teams have met twice before at Blackpool, each scoring a win, while at Birmingham the Shore men were heavily beaten.
The latter are very strong on their own heath, especially in cup ties, as Notts County and other first-class combinations know to their cost.
They are a burly lot, and play a vigorous rushing game
South Shore won the toss and elected to play with the strong wind behind them.
They at once attacked, and after experiencing hard lines, Burton gave a futile corner. The Villa forwards relieved with a pretty passing run, Allen shooting wide, a performance repeated immediately afterwards at the other end by Bob Eston.
The pretty combination of the visiting forwards was effectually broken up by Sharples, who relieved with a strong kick, Burton conceding another corner soon afterwards.
Play was now very fast and even, Warner being lucky in saving a scorcher from Parkinson.
Offside was given against Dickson, and a corner to the Villans proved abortive.
Hodgetts when close in shot wide, and at the other end two corners fell to South Shore in rapid succession.
Allen and Moore now put in some good work, but were held in check by Hasten and Gosling.
Langley stopped a daisy-cutter, and threw it away, a claim that the ball had been through being disregarded.
Dick Eaton shot and hit the post, the ball rebounding into play - hard lines.
Langley threw out, butted Hodgetts, and had again to save a moment later.
Neither side could score during the first half-hour, and then Allen made a tricky run down the wing and centre Hodgetts putting the ball through the corner.
After Langley had again been called upon, Dickson put in a second, offside being claimed unsuccessfully.
With the wind against them in the second half, the prospects of the home team were anything but encouraging. They, however, played with remarkable energy and dogged determination.
After a brief incursion into home territory, Warner had to clear from Dick Elston.
The home team returned to the attack and Cookson banged one through.
This greatly enlivened the game, the visitors playing with much more spirit than they had hitherto displayed.
The Shoreites were now having the best of the play, the back division completely demoralising the passing of the visiting forwards.
Bob Elston made a fine run down the left wing, and from his centre Cookson again beat Warner with a marvellous cross shot.
The Villans were now on their mettle, and began to scent danger.
The forward division was reorganised for a time, without any improvement.
Play was desperately fast and exciting, Albert Brown being conspicuous.
Try as they would the Villans could not score, the shooting of the forwards being erratic.
At the other end Warner performed marvellously in goal, stopping several gerund shots.
There was now only ten minutes to play, and it seems as though the game would be drawn.
The home team fell off somewhat and the visitors seemed to rally with the result that Hodgetts placed his side ahead with a rather questionable goal, supplementing this soon after by a beauty.
Time was then called, with the score Aston Villa 4, South Shore 2
