Harry Yates

Player #42 for Aston Villa, Harry Richard Yates, nicknamed Tubby, played as a midfielder for the club in a position then known as right half. Harry represented Villa between 1886-87 and 1889-90.

Harry was born in Walsall just ten miles from Villa’s current ground in August 1861 and made his debut as a 25 year old on 30th October 1886.

Villa had signed Harry from Walsall Swifts and he went on to represent the club 29 times across his three seasons at the club.

Harry played in 9 of the 10 games in Villa’s victorious 1886-87 FA Cup campaign, including the final at the Kennington Oval that hosted the 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion.

Harry made 13 League appearances in the 1888-89 league season helping Villa clinch 2nd place behind runaway leaders Preston North End.

Harry was described by contemporaries as “a solid defender with immense power to go with hits 14 stone weight”. Hence the nickname ‘Tubby’.

Harry’s last game for Villa came on 7th December 1899 and he then moved on to Walsall.

Harry had played his entire Villa career under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.

Harry passed away in 1932 in Birmingham aged 71.
