SATURDAY’S FOOTBALL.
LEAGUE MATCHES.
ASTON VILLA V. BOLTON WANDERERS
This match was played at Bolton in the presence of 7,000 spectators.
The Villa kicked off, and give-and-take play was witnessed, both sets of backs doing well.
The Wanderers pressed heavily, but the visitors’ defence was grand, shot after shot being repelled smartly by Warner.
The Wanderers had very hard lines, and half-time was called with neither side having scored.
On crossing over, the Wanderers, playing with great dash, scored from a scrimmage a minute after the start.
The Villans then took up the pressure and Hodgetts equalised after a few more minutes’ play.
Barbour then scored amid tremendous excitement, and Hunter again equalised, the game being 2 each.
A splendid game was witnessed, the play being fast and furious. The excitement was very great when Allen scored for the Villa, who then led by 3 to 2.
The Wanderers strove hard to make matters equal but no other goals were scored, and the Villa won a most interesting game by 3 to 2.
Aston Villa: Warner, goal; Cox and Coulton, backs; Burton. Devey, and Yates, half- backs; Brown, Green, Hunter, Allen, and Hodgetts, forwards.
Wanderers: Harris, goal ; Robinson and Fletcher, backs ; Bullough, Weir, and Roberts, half-backs; Davenport, Brogan, Barbour, Milne, and Tyler, forwards.
