Batty Garvey

Player #49 for Aston Villa, Batty Walter Garvey and nicknamed Bat, played as a forward for the club. Batty represented Villa in 1888-89 and 1889-90.

Batty was born in Aston, less than a mile from the current Villa ground, on 10th February 1864 and made his debut as a 24 year old on 8th September 1888.

Villa had signed Batty from Aston Shakespeare and he went on to represent the club 7 times and scoring 4 goals over his two seasons at the club.

Batty hit a hat-trick in Villa’s 6-1 demolition of Stoke City on December 14th 1889. Batty would only go on to score one more goal for the club as injury blighted his career.

Batty’s final game for Villa came on 28th December 1889 aged 25 having played under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.

Batty passed away in Birmingham in 1932 aged 68.
