Villa face Burnley for the first time in competitive football, Burnley become the 27th team that the Villa first team has played in League or Cup football.
Villa start the match with only 8 players on the field due to a dense mist around the ground preventing the team's arrival. Following a delayed arrival of the majority of the Villa team, the referee deems play should commence 8v11.
After five minutes had elapsed a Cox and Devey joined the play but Villa are forced to played the fixture 10v11 as Dawson can not make it through the confitions. Playing with 10 men on a pitch of the heaviest variety, that would render Villa's style of play impossible even in an 11v11 match, inevitably leads to defeat.
Ironically, Villa's previous fixture had seen Derby arrive with 10 men, before being allowed to field 11 from kick off by use of a reserve, and then allowing a 12th man to take the field of play after one of the original line up was injured. No such fortune was afforded Villa at Turf Moor.

After the goalkeeper had saved Burnley having conceded a corner - the home team did good work, and at end of twenty minutes Yates headed a fine goal from a pass by J. Brady.
Burnley had the best of the play, and very nearly scored from a free kick. The Villa gave another corner, and a severe struggle took place is front of the visitors’ goal.
The score at half-time was—Burnley, 1 goal; Villa, 0. The “Villans” had only ten men, and Cox had nothing to do.
Both sides pressed in turn on resumption, and in the course of a few minutes Gallacher notched another point for Burnley.
The “Villains” retaliated and secured a fruitless corner, but had to concede a similar advantage immediately afterwards, a strong attack ensuing. Yates put the ball through, only to have it disallowed. The home side maintained an almost incessant attack and the Aston goal had miraculous escapes.
K. A Brady notched a third point for Burnley, and, after a short interval M’Kay added a fourth. Burnley won a one-sided match by 4 to 0.
