What they Said
"Villa forwards were very often dangerous, but honours were divided fairly and equally at the finish."
SATURDAY’S FOOTBALL.
LEAGUE MATCHES.
ACCRINGTON V. ASTON VILLA - These clubs met at Accrington, before 2,000 spectators. Accrington kicked off in a dead calm, and some really meritorious work by the Villa forwards confined the play in the opening stages to the Accrington end, where, in response to their several good attempts, Horne showed up his usual abilities as a goalkeeper, though one shot from Brown was a beauty and took the first goal after about seven minutes.
The Reds wakened in time, and not long after the Villa success Kirkham was enabled to head an equalising shot. Two more shots hit the Villa post and crossbar respectively, and Goodall had also bad luck with a shot, the ball just grazing the timber. Barbour shot through, but the point was not allowed, and the interval came with the teams a goal each.
Nothing further was added to the score in the second half, despite very determined attempts at both ends. Warner was claimed to be over the line when repelling a smart shot of Brand’s, but unsuccessfully; and the Villa forwards were very often dangerous, but honours were divided fairly and equally at the finish. Result: 1 goal each.
