Fred Dawson

Player #31 for Aston Villa, Frederick Henry Herbert Dawson, known as Fred Dawson and nicknamed Frankie, played as a midfielder for the club in a position that was then known as a wing half.

Fred represented Villa between 1883-84 and 1888-89 including the inaugural Football League season.

Fred was born in Birmingham just 3 miles from Villa’s current ground in December 1858 and made his debut as a 24 year old on 10th November 1883.

Villa had signed Fred from Aston Unity and he went on to play 9 of the 10 games in Villa’s victorious 1886-87 FA Cup campaign, including the final at the Kennington Oval that hosted the 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion.

Fred had contributed a goal in the run to the final with a crucial strike in the 3-2 6th Round defeat of Darwen at Wellington Road.

Fred appeared 3 times for Villa in the inaugural league season of 1888-89 with his final game for Villa coming in the 4-2 home win over Derby County on the 29th December 1888 at the age of 30 before retiring from football through injury.

Fred played in the era when team selection was made by a Management Committee rather than the latter day more typical Manager role which from the 1884-85 season was led by George Ramsey.

Fred passed away in Birmingham on the 19th November 1938 aged 80.
