MATCHDAY QUOTES

"In the second section of the game, the Villa had matters nearly all their own way."

*Sporting Life*
Tuesday, 4 November 1884

ASTON VILLA v. WEDNESBURY TOWN.

These teams, drawn together in the first round of the Cup, met at Perry Barr, Birmingham, to decide the tie yesterday.

There were fully 4,000 spectators present, and much enthusiasm was manifested during the game, a large number of the Wednesbury team’s partisans being present.

Although playing uphill in the first half, the Villa at once commenced aggressive tactics. Woodcock at length relieved the pressure, but Archie Hunter getting possession enabled the Villa to again assume the offensive.

After repeated onslaughts on the town citadel, the Villa obtained a corner, from which a goal was scored. An appeal for foul proved unsuccessful. Almost immediately afterwards Arthur Brown added a second for the Villa, which was followed by one for the visitors, put through by G. Wood.

Nothing further was done up to half-time.

In the second section of the game, the Villa had matters nearly all their own way, and scored a couple of additional goals, one from Albert Brown, and the other from Archie Hunter.

Towards the end of the match the Wednesbury Town worked hard, but were unable to score, and the game ended in a win for the Villa four goals to one goal.
