Joe Simmonds
Player #22 for Aston Villa, Joseph Oscar Simmonds, known as Joe Simmonds and nicknamed Red Cap played as a defender for the club. Joe represented Villa between 1882-83 and 1887-88.
Joe was born in Birmingham, three miles from Villa’s current ground, on 20th April 1861 and made his debut as a 21 year old on 21st October 1882.
Villa had signed Joe from Hockley St. John’s Athletic and he went on to represent the club 22 times.
Joe played in every game in Villa’s 1886-87 run to win the FA Cup for the first time including the final where West Bromwich Albion were defeated 2-0.
Joe’s final game for Villa came on the 17th December 1887 at the age of 26. Joe retired through injury with a damaged shoulder.
Joe played in the era when team selection was made by a Management Committee rather than the latter day more typical Manager role which from the 1884-85 season was led by George Ramsey.
Joe passed away on 8th April 1940 in Birmingham aged 79.
