MATCH SUMMARY

Brentford, playing with 11 behind the ball, make it difficult for Villa to get any rhythm before a mystifying decision from the officials sees Diego Carlos penalised for being fouled in the box. But persistence pays off. Villa score twice either side of half time as Morgan Rogers grabs a spectacular for his first goal for the club, then Villa, out of nowhere are hit for two goals in as many minutes before Brentford take the lead. Class sees through and Villa equalise against a side who again revert to total and utter defence with the aim of leaving Villa Park with a point. They are successful and in truth Villa only have themselves to blame. Perhaps though there is some positive in handing Tottenham fourth place - a club not renowned for performing under pressure. Postscript: After Villa’s failure against Brentford, Tottenham did indeed take fourth spot, knocking Villa to 5th for the first time since November. More remarkable however was that, drawing against struggling forest, Tottenham’s support were calling for the head of their manager. A confused, bewildering club, kept relevant by media oxygen alone. But hey “Tottenham move into top four” as if it was their birthright.

ON THIS DAY

Douglas Luiz makes his 175th start for Villa whilst both Jhon Durán and Youri Tielemans make their 40th appearances for the club.

Meanwhile, Ollie Watkins’ 18th Premier League goal of the season puts him one behind Villa’s league record of 19 goals in 2012-13 held by Christian Benteke. Watkins though has 34 goal involvements in total (compared to Benteke’s 29), and has 28 in the League so far this season, eclipsing the previous Premier League best from Dwight Yorke from 1995-96. Watkins needs one more goal involvement to match Yorke’s 35 in all competitions from the same season and six more to equal Brian Little’s tally in 1976-77.

TEAM NEWS

Unai Emery makes six changes from the much changed line up that faced Abu Dhabi on Wednesday. Crucially Emiliano Martínez returns to goal, John McGinn returns to midfield and Ollie Watkins returns up front. With news that Jacob Ramsey has joined Mings, Buendia and Kamara with season ending injuries - two of whom won’t kick a ball in 2023-24 - Emery also cannot call on Matty Cash and now Clément Lenglet.

MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

MATCH QUOTES

"Jacob Ramsey is again with some problems in his toe. He is not going to be available for the rest of the season Emi Martinez and Ollie Watkins, they could play tomorrow. We will prepare the match. Tomorrow we will know if they are available and ready to play. They will both be in the squad. "For different players, the adaptation of the Premier League and our idea, style, demands - it is easier or sometimes more difficult. It depends. Moussa Diaby, he is getting better and he is with the possibility to play in different positions. "He can play more wide, as a number 10 inside, as a second striker and I am very happy with his progression. Often, I am speaking about him about the possibility to play in different positions and to get his best performances, his adaptation higher too. "He needs to be calm in different moments when he wasn’t. Now, it is the same - of course, I am very happy with him. I am being very demanding with him and he is completely involved in our structure. "His adaptation is progressing and we are respecting the Ramadan with him, of course. Everything we are planning and everything we are doing tactically, he is adapting better and better. "Of course, we want more from every player. With him, trying to keep calm and not being in a hurry or impatient. He is doing. The last matches he has scored or assisted. “Tomorrow we are playing at home and some players will be there the same, the coaches as well. After four months we played there. "We want to play tomorrow thinking in our game plan and respecting them a lot. They are a very competitive team. We are ready for tomorrow. We are trying to focus in our game plan completely. "We want to impose our game plan, but dominating the match is difficult. They are aggressive and press man by man. We will prepare the match trying to get our best performances. "The last match we played at home against Wolves, I was being demanding with the team because I think we have to play getting more in everything. "We won, we were happy with the match. But tomorrow will be a difficult match if we are not improving some things. "Tomorrow is the day 32. Three points. We are being consistent. We have to improve. We lost away to Man City clearly. "Tomorrow is a new challenge. We are still fourth in the table and we have to keep it. “Of course, we are trying to increase our level and trying to rise up our demands and try to feel comfortable being inside the top seven teams. "To keep it is the most difficult and challenging thing we have now. We are going to focus each match and three points we are going to face. We need to respect the opponent - it is very difficult, the Premier League. "To be consistent is the big challenge I have and I am sharing with the players and the club. We must try to enjoy the way we are doing but working hard, being demanding. There is not another way. "We are doing the plan we prepared before or when I arrived here. It is to be demanding in our way, starting with our owners, coaches and workers. As well, the supporters. "To include us between the teams who are contenders in the top seven positions in the table, it is very difficult. We can achieve it like we are doing now, but to be consistent for a long time is difficult. This is my objective. "We have an opportunity to rise and be a contender more than we were before. Firstly, to be in the top 10 and secondly, like we are now. With the teams we are facing who are stronger than us, they have more power to get there. We have to be intelligent and demanding, working better than others. This is the only way I know and I am really focused trying to do it." Unai Emery, pre-match. "It's frustrating. We lacked that big team mentality where they kill games off which is really disappointing. I'm not belittling my team. I'm part of it. I feel we need to somehow figure out when we're 2-0 up how to just shut up shop. "I felt when it went to 3-3 that we would go on and win. We had a lot of the ball and we were creating chances." "There is a lot of football to be played. We're battling with Tottenham who have got a great squad. It's going to be tight. We need to win the next six games." Ollie Watkins. “We are disappointed and frustrated because we played well until the 60th minute and after the 75th minute. We know we can lose everything in 10 minutes in the Premier League. The mentality we have is always to be demanding and understanding the way. "This is a process. Everybody is upset today. I will work it with the players and I will tell them how we can continue in our way being successful. We have 60 points in 32 games, more than our expectation before. We can draw one match like today against Brentford in case, like we did, lost a little but our focus and concentration. "This is the analysis I want to do, watching the game and watching it one time, second time, third time, fourth time. Trying to share with the players my analysis. "The first 60 minutes we played like I want and how we played here before when we won a lot of matches in a row. It was difficult to understand how we played after it. But I have respect for the opponent because they can do it. We made some not normal mistakes. "It was my mistake and I have to correct it. Reguilon was crossing three times and from there they scored goals. I have to correct it. “Douglas Luiz will play against Lille, two matches. Thursday at home and then the second leg. He will rest against Arsenal and Bournemouth. "The suspension is because we are playing and sometimes we are having some yellow cards and red cards. Control of emotions is very important. “Morgan Rogers needs time and he needs practice like he is doing. Scoring and playing well and understanding our idea quickly. He is progressing and today was a really good example. Keep going, keep going. He needs to analyse deeply with the attitude he has. "I can’t be in their mind. Of course, when we were winning 2-0 we conceded a few opportunities in the box. We were thinking the game was for us, but in 10 minutes, it could change. "We have to get that experience, to correct it quickly and avoid it for the next matches. We are in the process. Some players are playing for the first time to be in the top seven of the Premier League and these are the experiences they need to get. We have to play being demanding and never under pressure. "Ollie is being fantastic. He is very involved in the new demand we have as a club, as coach with them. His process is getting better. His wishes to get something collectively and individually is very important. "He achieves it through hard work. Today was one step ahead more. He has increased his level." Unai Emery, post match.
