MATCH SUMMARY

Villa dominate possession without scoring, West Ham can’t get the ball but score. An early econd half VAR review prevents Villa going two behind to a hand ball ‘goal’ before total domination and a siege on the West Ham goal follows. Villa make the breakthrough despite the hammers 11 man defence before right at the death VAR takes a ridiculously long time to rule out another handball ‘goal’. Villa desperately need to find the solution to these teams who put up defensive walls, they should have been out of sight by 90'. As an aside, if the referee had done what referees did from time immermorial... in other words gave an on-field decision... then what were plain and simple hand ball goals would never have been mentioned. But football fans, VAR and the media as it is today make a meal of everything. VAR is rubbish, we all know that, but it shouldn't even have needed to be used if the official in the middle was in control. Postscript: Not to get involved in their nonsense, but the embarrassing crowing of Spurs after their victory over Villa "game in hand, better goal difference"... a week later, a resounding victory over one of Europe's giants for Villa, and a three point, better goal difference gap to the mighty Tottenham. Spurs... there's a long way to go... always better to keep quiet... don't get too high... don't get too low... if you knew your club better you'd have learnt that already. UTV

KEY MAN

Matty Cash, point saving block as miraculously West Ham were still in the game.

TEAM NEWS

With John McGinn suspended after the furore of a fat cockney shouting about a tackle, Unai Emery shuffles the pack in an attacking line up for the usually fruitless visit to the London Stadium. Jhon Durán joins Ollie Watkins up front as Morgan Rogers is given a first League start.

MATCH QUOTES

“It was a very good match. The first half they were more aggressive but we played well in the second half. Our team is very good. We competed well today and we have to fight. "It will be very hard [the top-four fight] but we are a very good team. We have a very good coach and we prepare very well." Nicolò Zaniolo. "Good afternoon. We didn't control the game in the first half. We were not progressing to impose our position. When they are connecting with their attacking players, they scored one goal. We changed tactics in the second half and we got chances to score a goal and in the end we did score. The second half, we deserve it more than the first half. The referee decided it was handball. "We had a plan before the match and the plan can change. The players had to be ready and focussed in case we needed them like today. Zaniolo is working and he is focussed. "In this Premier League level it is difficult because the set piece takers are good. It is important to not concede set pieces. Overall, I think tactically in the second half we dominated and imposed our position. "It's better to win but we draw and I think it's good and we have to accept it. “We have to accept the result. The first half we didn’t control the game and we were more or less trying to control the game, imposing our positioning and create in the attacking third with the possibility to threaten them. “When we got in the box, we weren’t really clear. Even when they were doing a high press, we didn’t get good options with players to dominate the match. Our plan was to try and keep being consistent. The second half in this idea too. “When they scored the goal, the game changed and the plan too. The second half, we did better than in the first. We got in the box more and we were clearer in attacks. “They defended very low and they did it well. Even the goalkeeper was today saving some good actions from us. We were dominating and playing well. Then, we continued to try to win the match. “The spirit we showed was what I want. VAR is fair for both teams and the result is good for us. “Today, the players who were on the bench, they were focused. Nicolo is one of them. His impact was fantastic today and hopefully we can add him in this move for the rest of the season. “Of course, we are trying as well to use our players, giving them opportunities to get experiences and minutes. They need to practice playing. “Today, Morgan and Duran both had this possibility. We didn’t control the game like we planned, but in the first half even with other players this might have been the same. “We tried to get everybody to feel comfortable in the structure, playing in our idea and style. But in the first half we didn’t connect very well in the right side. “The second half we changed a little bit and for example, Diaby felt comfortable playing as well as a number 10. We connected with him and Leon Bailey very well. “This point is important because we are still being fourth. I will want to wait until the day 33 or 34 to change our objective if we keep this position. “We are still being now playing and fighting for it. We have other teams behind us and they could get to us. Until the day 33 or 34, I am not speaking about the new objective to be in the top four or top five. “We have to be happy, we have to be proud of our work until today. We have to respect the competition. Now we are going to rest and we are adding more and more players progressively, increasing in our squad players who go to their national team. I think this is good because it is very good news for us as they are playing well. “Other players will rest and we are going to then focus in two weeks at home against Wolverhampton. “VAR is fair for both teams. Always when it is for us or for the opponent, I accept it.” Unai Emery, post match.
