BIOGRAPHY

Player #951 for Aston Villa, Damián Emiliano Martínez Romero, known as Emiliano Martínez has played as a goalkeeper for the club since the 2020-21 season.

Emiliano was born in Mar del Plata, Argentina on 2 September 1992 and made his debut appearance for Villa at the age of 28 on the 21st September 2020 keeping a clean sheet in the 1-0 victory over Sheffield United.

Martínez is the 102nd custodian of the Villa goal in professional football.

Villa had signed Martínez from Arsenal for a fee of £19,580,000 on 16 September 2020.

In his first 7 Premier League games, Martínez kept 4 clean sheets and helped Villa thrash reigning champions Liverpool 7-2 on Sunday, 4 October 2020 and his former club Arsenal 3-0 on Sunday, 8 November 2020.

Martínez’s form continued and by the time Villa had beaten both Midlands rivals, West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers on their own patches in mid December, he had kept 7 clean sheets.

Despite Villa going down to 10 men in the Boxing Day fixture with Crystal Palace, Martínez kept his latest, 8th, clean sheet in 13 league games as Villa vanquished Palace 3-0.

Martínez had proven a superb signing for Villa and his performances had been a catalyst for the defensive improvement over the 2019-20 team and were the basis for the attacking dynamism that his Villa side displayed to climb into the top 6 of the Premier League over the festive period.

With over 60% of his games for the club ending in clean sheets and conceding on average just a goal a game, Martínez showed promise to be Villa’s strongest No 1 since Mark Bosnich in the 1990’s. With a back up goalkeeping team of Tom Heaton and Jed Steer, as with the attacking midfield, Villa had an embarrassment of riches between the posts.

By the end of March 2021 Martínez had recorded 14 clean sheets and created a tight defensive partnership with Ezri Konsa, Tyrone Mings, Matty Cash and Matt Targett. Although Villa’s early season form had faltered somewhat that foundation provide both hope and promise for the future.

Martínez’s 14 clean sheet record was one short of matching Villa’s Premier League record of 15 by Brad Friedel in 2009-10 with 9 games still to play, whilst Martínez’s eight clean sheets away from home in the Premier League after 15 games was the most in the division and a joint club record.
