MATCH SUMMARY

Villa face the made up side from Manchester, no history, no fans, no love, let alone one love, and suffer misfortune and a loss. Expecting the usual Emptihad script, Villa will put in a strong first half performance before conceding just on half time, at the start of the second half yet another act of refereeing generosity will put the Abu Dhabi further ahead before, chasing the game, Villa are beaten. It didn't go totally as expected - no refereeing generosity today - after all Jonathan Moss has been 'retired' - and in truth, the club formerly known as Manchester City for once actually deserved their victory over Villa, albeit a second string Villa. That Villa had to play with such an unprecedented list of absentees and got beaten is hardly a surprise, but it’s still disappointing to concede points to a lesser institution that has bent the rules mercilessly to get to where they are… but reality sometimes wins and life is often unfair. Win, lose or draw though, we are Villa. And we do things properly.

KEY MAN

Jhon Durán, did alright in difficult circumstances, scored and attempted the Ollie Watkins role with some success

TEAM NEWS

Villa already without first teamers Emiliano Buendía, Tyrone Mings, Boubacar Kamara, Jacob Ramsey, Matty Cash, John McGinn and Ollie Watkins lose Emiliano Martínez just before kick off through illness. Robin Olsen is called up as emergency ‘keeper leaving Villa with eight subs.

Hardly the ideal position to be in when facing Abu Dhabi at the Emptihad full of refereeing favours but pragmatism prevails. Fellow first teamers Álex Moreno, Pau Torres and Leon Bailey are rested by Unai Emery. In sum then, Villa take the field at the Emptihad with a team that is unrecognisable in its construct.

Without meaning any disrespect to the players selected, Emery clearly has bigger fish to fry than playing the Harlem Globetrotters of Abu Dhabi.

MATCH QUOTES

"Robin [Olsen] played well, we conceded four goals but he saved some so really good. Until the first goal we played well. We had a chance to draw the match but when they scored the third goal they showed their power. They are up there with Arsenal and Liverpool and today they confirmed it. "We have some injuries, we played Saturday and again this week. We have to try and save some players. We decided to do a competitive team with some young players too to get some confidence. At the end of the match we know they deserved the match they were better than us and they showed it. "Scoring goals is good. We try for the best performances and with Jhon [Duran] we keep going. "Focus is now Brentford. Difficult match coming up on Saturday. "We competed until the third goal but it's difficult to beat them here. They showed their power they are in contention for title again. We competed, we tried to do what we can do good but they showed their power so congratulations to them. "We tried to get tight but then they scored the third goal and it's more difficult so we tried to manage the 90 minutes and get something. "Robin [Olsen] is always ready to play and he did good work, he saved some good actions but we conceded four goals and for a goalkeeper that's not good. “It’s 38 matches and we are being consistent. Of course, when we are facing some matches against these teams they are showing their power. Newcastle, Liverpool, Manchester United we lost more or less two matches against them but we compete and were close to getting good performances playing only the matches against those teams in that moment. “Today, against Manchester City they showed their power and they showed now they’re going to be contenders with Arsenal and Liverpool to win this trophy in the Premier League. We have to try to get our spaces in the table and we are of course fourth still even after losing today. Our challenge now is Brentford on Saturday, to get three points like we were trying against Manchester City but with their power they deserved to win and were better. “We won against them at home and competed very well under different circumstances but the circumstances we have today were not enough to try to get three points. “Today was clear, we were motivated and excited to be competitive, trying to be consistent like we are being in the Premier League. Of course, fighting and playing against Manchester City, we were competing until the minute 60 and we were as well playing to try and build our team playing with players who have not been playing a lot. "We will need them. We need to give them chances to play. They need confidence and practice. Manchester City showed us, even when we nearly scored at 2-1, they were pushing us a lot. They deserved to win. "We made changes because we need to for some injuries and because as well, some players need to get confidence playing and practicing. "We will play a lot of matches for the next weeks, starting on Saturday against Brentford and then in the Conference League with Lille. It was important to be intelligent playing against Man City. We prepared the match trying to win, but thinking as well with some players injured and McGinn suspended, getting practice with some players. “We are without some players in some positions. It’s very important to recover, McGinn being available for Saturday. We are not with Jacob Ramsey and we need players. This is a good reason to give players minutes, like Tim [Iroegbunam] in the middle. Every minute he’s adding for us is important and then trying to continue being strong in the structure with the players. Unai Emery post match.
