TEAM NEWS

Robin Olsen makes his debut as player number 983 after 17 unused substitute appearances in possibly his final squad for the club with his loan spell from AS Roma due to end.

Emiliano Martínez misses out with injury sustained prior to the Burnley game despite having played that fixture.

Carney Chukwuemeka is dropped after his underwhelming performance against Burnley and may also have made his last squad appearance as his contract impasse continues.

Steven Gerrard pairs Philippe Coutinho with Emiliano Buendía in a highly attacking line up.

Viljami Sinisalo is called up as reserve ‘keeper as the final squad of the season features five under 23s representing Villa’s exciting academy prospects.

ON THIS DAY

Lucas Digne records his fourth assist in the last five games as Matty Cash makes it four goals for the season - and four goals since joining in September 2020.

Meanwhile in perhaps the happiest news of the season end for Villa, the questionable and controversial referee Jonathan Moss retires.

MANAGER WATCH

👎 Steven Gerrard's points per game standing is 22nd of 31 Villa bosses after 28 games - firmly bottom half.

Gerrard's win rate is 18th out of 31 over the same period

Worryingly, Gerrard's loss rate is 26th, the 5th worst of any Villa boss at the same point.

Comparing the end of the Smith regime to Gerrard’s tenure so far illustrates just how much improvement is required:

Dean Smith’s last 28 games delivered W9 D6 L13

Steven Gerrard’s first 28 games have delivered W10 D5 L13

Gerrard has accumulated one more win than Smith, whilst Smith accumulated one more draw than Gerrard.

Both managers lost 13 games but Dean Smith’s 13th defeat ended in the sack.

But what of the opponents?

For both managers their 28 games were against opponents with an average placing of 10th in the Premier League.

Smith played 9 top 6 teams in his 28 games.

Likewise, Gerrard played played 9 top 6 teams in his 28 games.

Both managers played teams in the top 3 five times.

However Smith played 4 relegated teams whilst Gerrard played 5 relegated teams.

By any measure Smith and Gerrard have had the same ‘run in’ and no improvement has been seen following the change of manager.

Taking Smith’s entire Premier League career following promotion from the Championship with a completely new squad largely made up of top flight novices, and comparing to Gerrard’s performance with a squad of 3 years top flight experience:

Smith delivered a record of W36 D18 L46

Over exactly 100 Games, Smith delivered a win rate of 36%, an unbeaten rate of 54% and a loss rate of 46%.

Gerrard has delivered a win rate of 36%, an unbeaten rate of 54% and a loss rate of 46%.

Once again the performances are exactly the same despite Smith having initially led an inexperienced side in the top flight and ultimately being sacked for underperformance.

In one of Gerrard’s own much loved phrases:

“Listen…. There is work to do.”

QUOTES

Pre-Match

“It’s with a heavy heart that I will be leaving Aston Villa Football Club. This club has been a huge part of my life for the last 23 years, making 193 appearances, 36 international caps and 15 years coaching.

“Having gained all these experiences I am looking forward to what may lie ahead. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Aston Villa, the players, staff and, in particular, the passionate supporters who have shown me loyalty both on and off the pitch. I wish you all the best in the future. UTV!”

Mark Delaney.

---

“Aston Villa can confirm that Mark Delaney has left his role in the club’s academy. The club would like to record its sincere thanks to Mark for his service to Aston Villa and wish him every success for the future.”

The best the club could muster.

---

Post Match.

“We were really good for 70 minutes - the players carried the plan out exactly as we wanted. We caused them a lot of problems but went into protection mode, stopped playing and City were relentless.

“They have been together for long time, spent a lot of money to put one of the best teams in the world together. I said to my players that you can never switch off, and they really turned it around in the last 20 minutes.

“I want them to be mentally stronger throughout a full game.

“I want players who are obsessed to win.

“I want us to really bottle the feeling of our inconsistencies this year and I want us to be really obsessed in pre-season to be better prepared mentally and physically for a full season.

“I really want winners in the dressing room. I don’t want players who are content with finishing 14th in the league and going out of cup competitions early. That’s got to hurt and we’ll try and set a culture and a standard here where it’s not acceptable to be inconsistent. That’s the challenge moving forward.

“Listen, we want [fans] to be optimistic and excited.

“We want to try and make acquisitions to get them even more excited but us, as a staff and players, we must deliver for the supporters.

“They’re the most important part of the club. The owners have been very supportive, always have been. Everyone who’s representing Aston Villa needs to come back after a summer break fresh, reenergised, reset and ready to go again because we can’t be satisfied with how the season’s gone.”
