Their 69th minute equaliser extended Wednesday's unbeaten run to 13 games and it could have been three points if midfielder Chris Bart-Williams had not squandered a golden opportunity to seal victory five minutes later when he shot wide from eight yards.
Bart-Williams gave Wednesday a 25th minute lead, but Villa levelled three minutes later through Neil Cox and Dean Saunders ended his eight-game scoring drought with a penalty to put the home side ahead in the 52nd minute after Dalian Atkinson was brought down.
