"Villa can have few complaints after being swamped by the visitors throughout as they inexplicably failed to rise to the occasion."

*Birmingham Evening Mail*
Thursday, 4 November 1993

VILLA’S UEFA Cup hopes were left tatters by slick Spaniards Deportivo La Coruna at Villa Park last night.

Striker Javier Manjarin settled the issue with a 36th-minute strike.

And Villa can have few complaints after being swamped by the visitors throughout as they inexplicably failed to rise to the occasion.

Manjarin headed home after a flowing move had ripped Villa’s defence wide open.

Gordon Cowans, recalled after being rested for two games, was caught in possession in his own half and the Spaniards countered quickly and clinically.

The ball flashed from Bebeto to Fran and then out wide to overlapping full back Nando, whose deep cross to the far post was headed down by MANJARIN and only helped into the roof of the net by Villa defender Paul McGrath.

Bebeto could have added to Deportivo’s advantage three minutes later but skied over from eight yards.
