Townsend the Villa hero
ANDY Townsend's brilliant strike put paid to Slovan Bratislava at Villa last night.
However, Aston Villa survived an anxious final four minutes before booking their place in the second round of the UEFA Cup.
Goals from Dalian Atkinson and the Irish international had Villa cruising but Ron Atkinson's men were rocked when Disan Tittell pulled a goal back in the 86th minute.
Slovan needed another score to go through on the away goals rule but Villa held on.
Villa had done well to take control with two goals in a seven minute spell early in the first-half.
They went ahead after 15 minutes when Atkinson made no mistake from close range.
However, it was Townsend's brilliant 22nd minute effort that put Villa firmly In the driving seat.
And then Slovan jolted Villa through Tittell's 86th strike - a 25-yarder similar to Townsend's in the first half.
That made the last few minutes exciting with Slovan throwing caution to the wind and Villa desperate to hold out.
