It was a classic case of after the Lord Mayorโs Show.
Villa lacked the fizz that saw them upset Manchester United in Sundayโs Wembley final and were as flat as the champagne left over from their victory banquet.
But Everton, desperate for points to protect their Premiership position, were not good enough to take advantage of Villaโs cup hangover.
They always looked the more likely side but they could not produce the final finish.
