VILLA captain Kevin Richardson was set up by Steve Staunton for his 82nd minute winner in front of a 27,815 sellout crowd.
But Birmingham captain John Frain missed a 36th minute penalty. He drove his shot straight at Villa's substitute goalkeeper Mark Bosnich, who had replaced the injured Nigel Spink just six minutes earlier.
