On This Day
Villa's troubling form ahead of the League Cup final continues as they lose a third successive Premier League game but they score for the first time in three to remain 7th in the table.
Villa lose three successive league games for the first time since May 1993.
Ray Houghton makes his 75th start in a Villa shirt (82 Appearances) to make it W39 D23 L20, 8 Goals and 12 Assists at a goal involvement rate of one for every 4.10 games he has played so far in his Villa career.
What they Said
“This was a terrible performance.
“It was an insult to the fans, the club and professional football.
“There was no urgency and we were very disappointing.
“I was looking to the established international players to keep things going but it was the youngsters in the side who kept scrapping.”
Ron Atkinson.
All that could be said for their slip shod out of tune performance on Saturday was that it was marginally more bearable than the complacent rubbish against Ipswich.
There is no doubt Villa were considerably more motivated than against Ipswich but it is so long since they attacked in a prolonged, incisive way they appear to have forgotten how to do so.
Manager Ron Atkinson was able to field his best defence for only the sixth time since September and their unfamiliarity showed at times.
Atkinson can surely never have been set a test like that which confronts him in six days’ time [the Coca-Cola Cup Final versus Manchester United at Wembley]. He must direct an ageing, off form team to produce a command performance on the world’s most famous football stage.
