If the first game was defined by fog then the replay was all about mud. So much mud that with the full time score at 0-0 the referee declined to play the additional 30 minutes extra time as the surface was simply unplayable. Another replay beckoned to earn a place in the League Cup Quarter Finals.
Joe Mercer's Villa have to settle for a goal-less draw in the League Cup fourth round replay at Home Park ahead of a second replay - once again at second division Plymouth.
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Fred Potter made his Villa debut aged 20 after joining from Cradley Heath Juniors in June 1956.
