Fred Potter

Player #485 for Aston Villa, Frederick Potter, known as Fred Potter, played as a goalkeeper for the club.

Fred played for Villa in 1960-61 making 6 appearances.

Fred was born in Cradley Heath, just 11 miles from Villa Park, on 29 November 1940 and made his debut appearance for Villa on Monday, 19 December 1960 aged 20.

Villa had signed Fred from Codsall Villa in June 1956 and he signed professional forms with the club in July 1959.

Fred was the 58th custodian of the Villa goal in League & Cup football and he made 3 appearances as Villa finished 9th in their return to Division One.

During Villa’s run to the League Cup final Fred made one appearance keeping a clean sheet in the 4th round Replay against Plymouth Argyle, and he made a further two appearances in that season’s FA Cup.

Over his 6 appearances, Fred conceded 9 goals at a rate of 1.5 goals per game, a figure that proved favourable to his contemporary Kevin Keelan (2.20 over 5 games) and that was on a par with regular custodian Nigel Sims (1.50 over 309 games) albeit over a significantly longer period.

Fred moved on to Doncaster Rovers in July 1962.

Fred had played under manager Joe Mercer.
