John was born in Seaham, County Durham on 13 April 1932 and made his debut appearance for Villa on Wednesday, 26 August 1959 aged 27.
Villa had signed John from Swindon Town for a fee of £6,000 in July 1959 and he went on to make 41 appearances as Villa took the Second Division Championship and won promotion back to Division One at the first attempt.
As well as securing the second division championship, John also helped Villa to FA Cup Semi finals in 1959-60 and runners up in the League Cup final in 1962-63.
During Villa’s victorious League Cup campaign in 1960-61 John made 7 appearances as Villa went on to lift the trophy appearing in the final second leg against Rotherham United that was held over to the 1961-62 season due to fixture congestion.
John played his final game for Villa on Saturday, 20 October 1962 aged 30 before moving on to Southend United in November 1962.
John had played under manager Joe Mercer.
In his later career John went on to manage Wrexham, Middlesbrough and Chelsea.
John passed away in Rhosddu, Wrexham on 24 November 2014 aged 82.
