Jimmy MacEwan
Player #475 for Aston Villa, James MacEwan, known as Jimmy MacEwan, played as a winger for the club in the outside right position.
Jimmy played for Villa between 1959-60 and 1965-66 making 218 appearances and scoring 32 goals.
Jimmy was born in Dundee, Scotland on 22 March 1929 and made his debut appearance for Villa - already a veteran - on Saturday, 22 August 1959 aged 30.
Villa had signed Jimmy from Raith Rovers for a fee of £8,000 in July 1959 and given his advanced years he had no right to be the player for Villa than he went on to be for the club providing great service into his late 30’s - although understandably his goalscoring prowess faded as the years progressed.
Villa could be reliably found hugging the touchline in typical winger fashion, cutting in as the opportunity arose to attack the opposition with his fast, tricky style.
With Villa’s regular winger Les Smith being forced to retire due to an achilles injury, Jimmy - at a similar age - was brought in to provide tactical continuity for the club and made a seamless transition from Scottish football. Striking up partnerships - most notably with Bobby Thomson and Vic Crowe - Jimmy went on to make 28 appearances, scoring 5 times, as Villa took the Second Division Championship and won promotion back to Division One at the first attempt.
As well as securing the second division championship, Jimmy also helped Villa to FA Cup Semi finals in 1959-60, runners up in the League Cup final in 1962-63 and as semi finalists in his penultimate season with the club, 1964-65.
During Villa’s victorious League Cup campaign in 1960-61 Jimmy hit 2 goals in 11 games as an ever present as Villa went on to lift the trophy after finally vanquishing Rotherham United in the two legged final which was held over to the 1961-62 season.
With the emergence of young prospect Alan Baker, Jimmy played his final game for Villa on Wednesday, 27 April 1966 aged 37 before moving on to Walsall in August 1966.
Jimmy had played under Villa managers Joe Mercer and Dick Taylor.
Jimmy passed away in Birmingham on 28 November 2017 aged 88.
